How to Choose a Medicare Agent (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)
Turning 65, or realizing your current Medicare plan isn't fitting anymore, is a strange kind of milestone. It's a relief to finally have coverage, and it's also confusing, because "Medicare" isn't actually one thing.
It's a set of choices: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage, whether to add a Part D drug plan, whether a Medigap policy makes sense, and which of the dozens of private plans in Michigan actually cover your doctors and prescriptions.
Most people don't want to become experts in Medicare. They just want to make sure they're covered. We totally understand, there's a lot to untangle with Medicare.
Licensed insurance agents get paid a commission by the insurance carrier when someone enrolls in a plan through them. That's why a good agent's help costs you nothing out of pocket.
While all the services are free, they are most definitely not equal. That's why we created this article: to explain what to look for when selecting an insurance agent.
Make sure they're independent, not tied to one carrier
Some agents work for a single insurance company and can only show you that company's plans. That's not necessarily dishonest, but it does mean you're only seeing part of the picture.
An independent agent, by contrast, is licensed to compare plans across multiple carriers, so the recommendation is based on what fits you, not what a single company is selling that year.
Ask directly: "How many companies' plans can you show me?" A good agent will answer without hesitation.
Look for someone who explains, not just sells
You should walk away from a conversation with a Medicare agent understanding your options, not just holding a pen. If an agent is rushing you toward a signature, talking over your questions, or can't explain the difference between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement in plain English, that's a sign to look elsewhere.
The best agents treat the meeting like a conversation with a family member, because for many of us, choosing Medicare is exactly that personal.
Check whether they actually meet with you in person
A lot of Medicare enrollment happens over the phone now, sometimes through call centers where you never speak to the same person twice. There's nothing wrong with phone or Zoom support if that's what works for your schedule, but if you'd rather sit across the table from someone, ask whether that's an option.
An agent willing to come to your home or meet you in person is telling you something about how they do business.
Confirm it costs you nothing
This one surprises people: licensed Medicare agents are paid by the insurance carriers, not by you. A legitimate agent's help, comparing plans, walking you through enrollment, being available if something comes up later, should never cost you anything out of pocket. If anyone asks you to pay a fee for basic plan guidance, that's a massive red flag.
Ask what happens after enrollment
Choosing a plan isn't a one-time event. Life changes; you move, your prescriptions change, a doctor leaves your network, the Annual Enrollment Period rolls around again in the fall. A good agent doesn't disappear once you've signed up. Ask directly: "If I have a problem with my plan in six months, can I call you?" The answer tells you a lot about whether you're a client or just a commission.
Why We Built Huggins Medicare Advisors Around These Answers
We started Huggins Medicare Advisors because too many people we knew, including our neighbors, church members, our own family, had gone through the Medicare enrollment process and come out the other side more confused than when they started. Or worse, they'd ended up in a plan that didn't actually fit their life, because whoever helped them was more focused on the sale than the person sitting across from them.
Scott Huggins spent 30 years as an engineer before becoming a licensed insurance agent, continuing a family tradition that goes back more than 40 years. That engineering background shows up in how he works: he's an analyst at heart, someone who genuinely enjoys digging into the details and comparing options to find the best value. Not because it's his job, but because it's how he's always operated, for his own friends and family long before it was a career.
That's the standard we hold every client to.
We come to you. Whether that's your kitchen table, our office in Novi, or a phone call, we meet you where you're comfortable. We know that for a lot of people, especially those managing health issues or mobility challenges, "just come into our office" isn't a real option. So we don't make it one.
We're independent. We're not limited to one insurance company's plans. We compare what's actually available to you across carriers and help you find the plan that fits your health needs and your budget, not the plan that pays us the most.
We explain everything in plain English. No jargon, no rushing. We start with a couple of phone calls to understand your situation, then take the time to research your options before ever recommending anything.
We stay after enrollment. Our relationship with clients doesn't end the day you sign up. If something changes, if a question comes up, if Annual Enrollment rolls around and you want to review your options again, we're the same people you talked to the first time.
It costs you nothing. Our services are 100% free to you, the same as any licensed agent. The difference is what we do with that arrangement, we use it to actually serve you, not just close a sale.
We won't pretend money doesn't matter to us; it's how we make a living, same as anyone. But it's not the reason we do this work. We do it because we believe people deserve to be treated like people during one of the more confusing decisions of their lives, not processed like a number in a call center queue.
